HISTORICAL SKETCH OF IMMANUEL LUTHERAN
CHURCH

In
the summer of 1900 the 90th and Dodge area was canvassed to establish a
mission church and by Fall worship services were being held in
Underwood school at 78th and Cass. By 1901. Holy Trinity Lutheran
Church was organized and construction was started at 90th and Harney.
The church and parsonage were dedicated in 1902..
The
Benson area was surveyed for the purpose of establishing a mission
church in 1911. A mission congregation began worshipping at 60th and
Miami. On June 16, 1912, Emmanuel Lutheran Church was organized and
incorporated on April 7, 1913. A house at 59th and Wirt was dedicated
for worship in 1914 and by July, 1918, the congregation became
self-supporting.
On
Nov. 23,1919, Holy Trinity and Emmanuel merged to form Immanuel
Lutheran Church. The cornerstone was laid at the present site at 60th
Avenue and Maple on October 10, 1920. The building was dedicated on May
10, 1921.
In
October of 1930, the congregation was formally received into the
Central District of the American Lutheran Church.
The
Austin three-manual pipe organ was dedicated on August 18, 1935. The
new parsonage was dedicated on September 14, 1941
During
1951 the chancel area and the church interior, were redecorated. The
new Educational, Wing was dedicated on April 28, 1957; and in 1961; the
organ was rebuilt and rededicated.
The
church was renovated in 1965 and rededicated on May 16. Carillon bells
were installed in 1974 and two octaves of Schulmerich hand bells were
added to the music department in 1976.
With
the completion of a large church merger, we became a part of the
Evangelical Church in America in 1987. The present membership is 859
baptized members with opportunities for all ages in worship, education
and fellowship. Immanuel exists to serve God and the community of
Omaha. Our motto is: "Welcome, May We Serve You?"
